Here lies Osaka’s oldest park. It is a green sanctuary known as Suminoe Park. Imagine, if you will, a place that has been a source of relaxation for locals and visitors alike since 1873.

Suminoe Park isn’t just any park. It is a park with many stories. It connects a long history with the vibrant colors of seasonal flowers and lush greenery. The park offers a serene escape.

Originally, Suminoe Park was part of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. The shrine’s horse paddock once occupied this land. What is now the Shiokakemichi. It runs east to west through the park’s center. It once served as the Omotesando of Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.

Let’s talk about the Takatoro. This ancient lighthouse stands proudly facing National Route 26. It is believed to be Japan’s oldest. It was a gift to Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine during the Kamakura period. The current lighthouse is a restoration dating back to 1972.

Centuries ago, the sea reached the park’s western edge. The view from Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine was breathtaking. It was a classic “Sumiyoshi pattern” of white sand and blue pine trees. This iconic scene was celebrated in countless Japanese poems.

At the park’s east entrance, a monument stands. It bears a poem by the renowned poet Basho. He composed it on September 13, 1694. He was visiting the Takara no Ichi ritual at Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine.

Suminoe Park is vibrant throughout the year. The cherry blossom festival paints the park in delicate pink hues each spring. The Sumiyoshi Festival fills the summer with energy and tradition. As winter approaches, New Year’s shrine visits bring a sense of peace.

Getting here is easy. Suminoe Park is close to Sumiyoshi Taisha Station on the Nankai Main Line. It is also near Sumiyoshi Torii-mae Station on the Hankai Railway.

Take a moment to appreciate Suminoe Park. It is more than just a park. It is a living testament to Osaka’s history. It is a place where nature and culture intertwine. It’s a green retreat in the heart of the city. It is waiting to be explored.
