Before us stands the Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch Denkmal. A monument to a man who changed Germany.

This imposing statue is more than just marble bronze and granite. It’s a testament to Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch. He championed the cooperative movement. He believed in the power of ordinary people. He founded the credit association the precursor to the Luisenstadt Bank. This bank once stood across the square.

The figure of Schulze-Delitzsch is striking. He’s depicted as a speaker his right hand slightly raised. He’s dressed in a frock coat his overcoat open. The original design included more. There were supporting figures. A blacksmith a farmworker symbolized self-help. A mother teaching her son represented education. These were unfortunately removed during the 1970s.

The Denkmal’s journey is as compelling as Schulze-Delitzsch’s life. It was unveiled in 1899. The fiftieth anniversary of the first cooperative in Delitzsch. The location was carefully chosen. Authorities had rejected earlier proposals. Finally the Inselplatz now Schulze-Delitzsch-Platz was selected. Then in 1974 the Denkmal was taken down as part of a misguided urban renewal project. The base figures were lost. The statue itself ended up in storage at the Märkisches Museum. It wasn’t until 1992 that it returned to its rightful place. Though sadly without its original companions.

Schulze-Delitzsch’s legacy extended far beyond the cooperative movement. He was a member of the Prussian National Assembly and the Prussian House of Representatives. He even served in the Reichstag. He tackled economic issues affecting small businesses. His work as founder of the Association of Production and Economic Cooperatives continued until his death.

So here we stand before the Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch Denkmal. A reminder of his vision. A vision that empowered countless individuals. It is a reminder that even the smallest contributions can create lasting change. The Denkmal’s own story mirrors this resilience. A testament to a man and an idea that refused to be forgotten.
