Right before us stands the Liaison Sceptre-Gray. It is more than just a path. It’s a story of urban renewal. This pedestrian and cyclist link connects Rue Gray and Rue du Sceptre. It gives new life to a forgotten urban space.
Imagine this once-overgrown area transformed. The Liaison Sceptre-Gray is now a vital connection between two neighborhoods. Cars are far away. This offers a peaceful route.
The Liaison Sceptre-Gray project addressed significant challenges. A steep 17-meter height difference had to be overcome. Stability work was needed on the railway embankment. The result is impressive.
The path includes a terracotta-paved section. There is also a brushed concrete staircase. Steel handrails ensure safety. Fencing clearly marks access points. Lighting illuminates the path.
The Liaison Sceptre-Gray is part of a larger plan. This plan aims to connect Germoir station to Rue Gray. The route goes via the Esplanade of the European Parliament. It links the Wavre-Viaduct-Sceptre area. The project was completed as part of the Sceptre neighborhood contract.
Beliris worked with the municipality of Ixelles. They also collaborated with Brussels Mobility and Infrabel. Construction began in March. It took just over a year.
However the Liaison Sceptre-Gray faced criticism after its inauguration. Some cyclists found the bike channel unsuitable. It only exists on one side. This makes it hard for two bikes to pass. Concerns were also raised about accessibility for wheelchairs.
Despite these issues the Liaison Sceptre-Gray is significant. It represents an investment of 1.6 million euros. It provides a faster route from Rue Gray to the European Parliament.
The Liaison Sceptre-Gray stands as a testament to urban connectivity. It shows how neglected spaces can be revitalized. This creates functional and visually appealing connections for the community.
