Clutching your city guides, imagine stepping back in time to the early 1900s. Voorhees Hall wasn’t always the bustling academic hub it is today. It began as the Ralph Voorhees Library, a grand, light-filled space funded largely by philanthropist Ralph Voorhees and his wife, Elizabeth Rodman Voorhees. The library opened its doors in 1903, becoming a beacon of knowledge on the growing campus. Before its construction, the college’s book collection resided in Kirkpatrick Chapel, and even earlier, in Old Queens. Voorhees Library, with its central plan and large windows, was a significant addition to the college. The design maximized natural light, creating a welcoming atmosphere for students. This architectural gem served as the main library until the 1950s. The college’s collection outgrew the space, necessitating the construction of the Archibald Stevens Alexander Library on College Avenue. Voorhees Hall then transitioned into office space in 1956 before becoming the University Art Gallery in 1967. Years later, in 1983, the gallery expanded into the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, further extending down Hamilton Street. Today, Voorhees Hall houses the Department of Art History and serves as a popular lecture hall. While its purpose has evolved, the building’s historical significance remains. Even after renovations, the original pillars at the Hamilton Street entrance still stand, whispering tales of the past. And if you look closely, you might just feel the presence of countless students who once roamed its halls, seeking knowledge within its walls.
