Standing here, overlooking the lively Port de Nice, it’s hard to believe this bustling hub began as a humble swamp. Yes, you heard me right, a swamp! Back in the 18th century, the Piedmont-Sardinia kingdom envisioned a grand maritime gateway. After an unsuccessful attempt at a different location, they set their sights on the swampy area known as Lympia. Thus began the ambitious project of building Port de Nice. Imagine, a project so grand it spanned almost 150 years! It involved constructing an artificial harbor with two berths, an armory, a wharf, and even a surrounding district. The impact of Port de Nice on the city’s fortunes was remarkable. Trade flourished, particularly with the Italian peninsula, and by 1860, Port de Nice was a bustling economic center specializing in food products. The port also became a vital passenger hub, particularly for those traveling to Corsica. Today, Port de Nice stands as a testament to the city’s rich maritime past, a blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy.
