“A gift for the Prophet,” the young boy, Sahl, whispered to his brother, Suhayl. “But he insists on paying.” We stand before Masjid al-Nabawi, the Prophet’s Mosque. It began right here, on land owned by these two orphans. They offered it freely to Muhammad for his mosque, but he, recognizing their vulnerability, insisted on fair compensation. Masjid al-Nabawi, second only to Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram in holiness, pulsates with history. Built in 622 AD, it wasn’t simply a place of worship. It was the heart of Medina. A community center. A court of law. A school. Imagine the open-air structure, its roof of beaten clay and palm leaves supported by palm trunks. Picture Muhammad on the minbar, delivering the khutbah. Masjid al-Nabawi has seen remarkable transformations. Initially, the qiblah wall faced north, towards Jerusalem. The Suffah, a sheltered area, ran along the northern wall. Expansions under the caliphs Umar and Uthman altered its size and shape. Uthman’s reconstruction in 649 reoriented the mosque towards Mecca, the qiblah we know today. The Umayyad Caliph al-Walid I dramatically expanded Masjid al-Nabawi. He incorporated the resting places of Muhammad, Abu Bakr, and Umar within the mosque’s walls. This expansion also likely saw the construction of the first minarets in Islamic architecture. Over the centuries, rulers continued to embellish and enlarge Masjid al-Nabawi. Each left their mark, from Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent’s minaret to the vibrant Green Dome built by Sultan Mahmud II in 1817 and painted its iconic green in 1837, marking the tomb of Muhammad. Today, the mosque we see is a testament to centuries of devotion. Its sliding domes, a modern marvel, allow sunlight to illuminate the prayer hall and protect worshippers from the midday sun. Masjid al-Nabawi stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a living chronicle, each stone whispering tales of devotion, leadership, and architectural ingenuity. As you walk through its hallowed halls, remember the young orphans, the Prophet’s wisdom, and the generations who have prayed beneath these domes.
