“In 1796 a clash of armies echoed through the Emmendingen valley”. This wasn’t just any battle. It was the Battle of Emmendingen a pivotal moment in the War of the First Coalition. The year is 1796. The French Army of Rhin-et-Moselle under General Moreau was retreating through the Black Forest. Austrian forces under Archduke Charles relentlessly pursued them. Emmendingen nestled in the Elz valley became the stage for a fierce confrontation. The terrain itself played a crucial role. The Elz River its tributaries carved deep ravines through the rugged mountains. Heavy rains turned the river into raging torrents making movement difficult for both sides. This strategic location between the Black Forest and the Kaiserstuhl gave the Austrians a tactical advantage. The high ground offered them excellent positions for sniping and ambushing. Imagine the scene. French soldiers struggling across muddy slippery paths while Austrian sharpshooters rained down deadly fire from the hills above. The battle was brutal. Two generals fell one from each side. General Michel de Beaupuy for the French and Feldzeugmeister Wilhelm Graf Wartensleben for the Austrians. The Austrians won the battle. Their victory prevented Moreau from securing a crossing at Kehl a crucial objective in his retreat. The Battle of Emmendingen was a significant setback for the French. It forced them to abandon their plans for a three-pronged withdrawal. Their retreat continued to Schliengen five days later. The impact of this battle resonates even today. It serves as a reminder of the harsh realities of war. The story of the Battle of Emmendingen is etched into the very landscape of this valley. It lives on in the memories of those who fought here and in the enduring historical significance of this place. Let us remember the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers on both sides. Their legacy is intertwined with the very soil of Emmendingen.
