“Can you feel that invigorating air?” We’re standing at the foot of Hoyt Mountain. It is a peak offering panoramic views and a rich history. Despite its relatively low profile, Hoyt Mountain provides a rewarding experience for hikers.

Hoyt Mountain wasn’t always a formal name. It only became official in 1986. Before that, locals knew it. The Forest Service recognized its local name and submitted it to the USGS. By 1995, Hoyt Mountain appeared on official maps.

The mountain got its name from Silas Hoyt. He was a rancher who lived nearby in 1888. Newspapers even called him “the hermit of Big Tujunga Canyon.” Hoyt’s ranch met an unfortunate end. A landslide destroyed it in the 1930s.

There’s a rather intriguing story involving Silas Hoyt. In 1902, two hunters found Hoyt in poor condition at 80 years old. They offered to improve his ranch in exchange for a lease. Hoyt agreed. The hunters enhanced the land and even explored mining. Later, Hoyt tried to retract the deal. After Hoyt’s death in 1916, his daughters fought for the inheritance. The California Supreme Court ruled in favor of the hunters in 1919. They then gifted three-quarters of the land back to the state.

Hiking Hoyt Mountain offers a unique experience. The east ridge route from Georges Gap Trailhead is short but steep. It’s only half a mile to the summit. But there is an 842-foot elevation gain. Another option is the west ridge from Grizzly Flat Trailhead. This route is longer about 1.5 miles on fire road and another half mile on the ridge. The total elevation gain is 1400 feet. Both routes offer incredible views.

As you ascend, remember the trail’s history. Part of the loop circles the mountain. It follows an old trail blasted out of the cliffside. This was done roughly 100 years ago. You might also pass LA’s outdoor school for kids. It has been operating since 1925.

If you look east, you’re facing the San Gabriel Fault. It moves about 3mm each year. It was once part of the San Andreas Fault.

Be prepared for varying conditions. Some sections of the trail may be washed out. These washed-out sections are remnants from the winter storms of 2022 and 2023. They can be a bit tricky and require hands and knees. It is important to wear sturdy footwear. Trekking poles are highly recommended for the steep climbs and descents.

Hoyt Mountain is a place of beauty and solitude. Relatively few people visit its summit. The mountain offers panoramic views. It provides a physical challenge. It also connects you to a fascinating slice of local history. So take a moment. Breathe in the fresh air. Appreciate the unique story of Hoyt Mountain.
