“Oshytkovo,” they once called this place. But today, we know it as the Main House of the Almazovo Estate. This estate whispers tales of noble families. It shares stories of war victories and of course, beautiful landscapes.

Today, we stand before the Main House of the Almazovo Estate. It is located near Shchelkovo in the Moscow region. This place has a rich history dating back to the 18th century.

The Almazovo Estate was once owned by the Elizarovs. Later, it passed to Semyon Erofeevich Almazov. The Almazov family owned the estate until 1753. During their time, the first wooden church was built. It was dedicated to Sergius of Radonezh.

In 1753, Nikita Akinfievich Demidov acquired the Almazovo Estate. He hailed from a family of Ural industrialists. Demidov constructed the estate. He was known as a patron of the arts and sciences. He even corresponded with Voltaire.

During the 1760s and 1770s, an architectural complex was built. It included a formal park with canals and ponds. The Demidov estate featured a 700-meter canal. In the center was a circular island with the main house.

The main alley ran parallel to the canal. It featured an orangery and buildings for the household. On the other side of the canal was a park. It featured ponds with eight islands. These islands were connected by bridges. They were decorated with pavilions.

In the early 19th century, reconstruction began. A new house was built with wings. However, it was never fully completed. A two-story Empire-style building was erected. It had a portico with columns. The first floor was decorated with white stone details.

The existing church was built between 1814 and 1819. It was designed in the style of classicism. The church is known for its proportions and decor. Inside, you would see frescoes on the pediment.

The Almazovo Estate complex suffered damage over time. Today, only a few buildings remain. These include the main house and two wings. These remaining structures are being restored. The park is overgrown. However, its beauty remains. The Almazovo Estate’s park was designed with an artificial water system. The 700-meter long canal is still visible. It once began near Mount Sion. It ended with Lebyazhy Island.

As you explore the Almazovo Estate, imagine its past splendor. Picture the Demidovs entertaining guests. Envision the park with its canals and bridges. The Main House of the Almazovo Estate has witnessed centuries of Russian history. Its beautiful church and buildings give a glimpse into the lives of its noble owners. It is a place where history and nature intertwine. The Almazovo Estate offers a unique insight into Russia’s cultural heritage. Today the Almazovo Estate houses a special boarding school. It is a protected cultural heritage site.
