“Another church?” you might ask yourselves. Not just another church. Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church holds stories within its walls.

Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church stands as a beacon. It is a testament to faith and community in Detroit. Its history is rich with change and growth.

Originally, St. Luke’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in 1888. It started as an offshoot of St. Paul’s. The congregation first gathered in a chapel on Kercheval at Field Streets.

By the 1940s, St. Luke’s decided to move eastward. They acquired land at Kercheval and Seminole Streets. World War II caused construction delays due to rationing. The church occupied a mansion next door until the war ended. Construction finally began in 1949. The Norman-Gothic style church was completed in 1950. It seated 400 people.

Around 1982, St. Luke’s disbanded. Mount Olive East Missionary Baptist Church then moved into the building. Their previous location was demolished for the Chrysler plant expansion in 1991. Mt. Olive closed around 2009. The church building remained vacant for a time.

Now, let’s jump to another church. Davison Avenue Missionary Baptist Church began as a mission in October 1923. It was located on East Davison Avenue in Detroit. In 1973, its name changed to Davison Missionary Baptist Church. The church is located on East Dakota.

Here is another story. Dr. C.D. Pettaway became pastor of Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church in 1947. He served as president of the National Baptist Convention of America. He served from 1957 to 1967. A building campaign started. Funds were raised for a new sanctuary. Ground broke on March 6, 1965. The Chapel’s architectural design is one of only five of its kind in the world.

Rev. William J. Ross wanted to enlarge the choir loft. He also envisioned adding an educational wing. Rev. Arnette Dotson brought these visions to life. Today, the education annex is named in Rev. Ross’s honor.

In 2006, thirty-four acres of land were purchased. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 1, 2007. This was for a 40,000 square-foot worship facility. The first service was held on November 22, 2008.

Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church continues to be a light. The church stands in the community where it was founded over 150 years ago. The congregation includes members from infancy to their late 80s.

As you stand before Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church, remember its journey. From its Lutheran roots to its Baptist present, this place has been a cornerstone of faith. It adapted through war, relocation, and growth. The church embodies the enduring spirit of Detroit. It is a testament to community and faith.
