Why is Pettstadt called “Pettstadt”? The answer, my friends, lies hidden in the mists of time, around the year 1000 AD. Back then, a fellow named Petto – a popular chap in these parts, it seems – lent his name to this charming village. Pettstadt, as we know it, sits gracefully where the Rauhe Ebrach River curtsies into the Regnitz, a mere stone’s throw – or a brisk walk – south of Bamberg. Its story begins much earlier, though. Imagine the 8th century, a time when roads needed guarding, and Pettstadt was born, a sentinel on an ancient route. But it wasn’t until 1070 that Pettstadt decided to make its mark on history, appearing in writing as “Betestat” in the death records of Bamberg Abbey. For centuries, Pettstadt thrived under the watchful eye of the Cathedral Chapter of Bamberg. Then came 1803, a year of massive change, when the grand reshuffling of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss brought Pettstadt under Bavarian rule. Today, Pettstadt stands proud, home to almost 2,000 souls. It’s a village that embraces its past, a fact evident in its beloved landmark – the Baroque masterpiece, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Designed by Johann Jakob Michael Küchel, a student of the renowned Balthasar Neumann, the church is a testament to Pettstadt’s enduring spirit. So, as you wander through the heart of Pettstadt, remember the tale of Petto, the guardian village, and the architectural gem that is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.
