Mok-dong has a rich history. During the Joseon period, this area was a ranch. Horses grazed here among many trees. Over time, it transformed into a wooden area.
However, in the 1980s, Mok-dong was among the cheapest residential areas in Seoul. The Anyangcheon river was polluted. There was a risk of heavy flooding. Unauthorized factories created a lot of noise.
Things changed in 1983. Development plans were decided for the region. The military government developed Mok-dong as a high-density residential area. This was ahead of the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics. The goal was to meet growing housing demands in Seoul. It also filled a void on the way from the airport to the stadiums.
The development wasn’t without challenges. Original residents protested low relocation compensation. They were initially offered only 100,000 won. These protests led to the recognition of the right to live in the country.
Today Mok-dong is a thriving area within Yangcheon District. Yangcheon District sits on the southwest side of the Han River. Mok-dong is at its center.
The district has several sights to see. Mokdong Stadium hosted Olympic Games events in 1988. The baseball stadium hosts many games for juniors. Since 2008, it has been used for amateur and professional baseball games.
