“Imagine a floating pontoon, the first iteration of what we now know as the Kamennoostrovsky Bridge”. Today we are standing before the Kamennoostrovsky Bridge in Saint Petersburg. It is more than just a way to cross the Malaya Nevka River. It is a testament to the city’s history.

The Kamennoostrovsky Bridge connects Aptekarskiy Island and Kamenny Island. It is a vital artery in this beautiful city. The bridge we see now was constructed between 1953 and 1955. However, its story began much earlier.

Let’s step back in time. The first bridge on this site was a pontoon bridge. It was floated into place in 1760. This was a temporary solution. A more permanent structure was needed. In time, the pontoon bridge was replaced. A fixed seven-span wooden bridge took its place. For over a century, this wooden bridge served the city.

But as Saint Petersburg grew, so did its needs. A stronger, more modern bridge was required. The current Kamennoostrovsky Bridge is a five-span metal structure. It rests on granite-clad reinforced concrete piers. Its design includes decorative obelisks and beautiful street lamps. These features hark back to the 19th century.

The Kamennoostrovsky Bridge has undergone many changes. In 1760, the first pile bridge was built. Architect A. F. Vista designed it with 11 supports. In 1765, it was replaced with a floating bridge with 10 supports. The floating bridge connected with pile structures on the banks. This bridge was frequently repaired due to wood decay.

In 1811-1813, the first wooden arched bridge in Russia appeared here. It had wooden supports and stone foundations. Engineers A.D. Gotman and S.O. Panteleev oversaw the construction. The bridge was about 150 meters long. It lasted for 20 years.

In 1859, the bridge was completely rebuilt. Engineer A. Shtukenberg designed the new bridge. The arch system was replaced with a simpler support system. In 1875, a horse-drawn railway crossed the bridge. This required reinforcing the structure. In 1899, the bridge was again completely rebuilt. It had 11 spans and a drawbridge section.

In 1906-1907, the city built electric tram lines across the bridge. Engineer V.R. Patz-Pomarnatzky led the project. The bridge was reinforced to handle the trams. Tram service started in 1908. In 1938, the Kamennoostrovsky Bridge was completely reconstructed. The wooden spans were replaced with metal ones. The manual drawbridge became electric. The bridge was now 152.5 meters long and 18 meters wide.

In 1953-1954, the bridge was rebuilt to handle increased traffic. Engineers from Lengiproinzhproekt designed the new bridge. The engineers V.V. Demchenko, B.B. Levin and architects P.A. Areyshev and V.S. Vasilykovsky were also involved. A five-span metal bridge with a central drawbridge was constructed. The bridge reopened on October 17, 1954. In 1999, the bridge underwent major repairs.

The bridge has non-separable, double-girder metal spans. The roadway is made of reinforced concrete with asphalt. The drawbridge has a two-winged system. The supports are made of solid concrete. The facades are faced with granite. Granite parapets and metal railings adorn the bridge.

The Kamennoostrovsky Bridge stands as a symbol of Saint Petersburg’s resilience. It has been rebuilt and renovated many times. Each version reflected the needs of the era. As you cross this bridge, remember its rich history. Think of the people who built it. Consider the countless journeys it has facilitated. The Kamennoostrovsky Bridge is a vital part of Saint Petersburg’s story.
