Hidden amidst the tranquil streets of Arturo Soria lies the Parroquia Santa María de Cervellón a true gem. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of the Mercedarian Order. This unassuming church holds a rich history.
The Parroquia Santa María de Cervellón wasn’t always known by this name. It began life as the Parroquia San Jacinto. A significant change occurred on December 28 1965. The Archdiocese of Madrid entrusted this parish to the Mercedarian Order. Father José González Cid became the first parish priest in 1966. He served the community while residing at the Provincial Curia.
The present church building is a relatively recent addition. After extensive negotiations the new church was inaugurated on February 18 1967. The Mercedarians acquired the OCSHA residence in 1978. This provided space for both the Provincial Curia and the parish’s needs. The official inauguration by Bishop Ricardo Blanco followed on October 5 1980. A truly grand event.
The Parroquia Santa María de Cervellón underwent a significant transformation in 1996. Extensive renovations modernized the church. More importantly a name change occurred on January 18 1996. The parish was officially renamed in honor of Saint Mary of Cervelló. This was a significant tribute to the first Mercedarian nun. The new church was dedicated by Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela on February 9 1997.
Saint Mary of Cervelló herself is a fascinating figure. She lived from 1230 to 1290. She was renowned for her prayers and her tireless care for the sick in Barcelona. Legend speaks of her miraculous interventions. She was said to have appeared on the wings of the wind to rescue ships in distress.
The Parroquia Santa María de Cervellón houses remarkable artwork. The ceiling depicts the Church as a boat guided by Saint Mary. The baptistery features a striking mural and a magnificent baptismal font. Other highlights include the “Miseria Humana” mural the Tabernacle the “Tree of Life” and beautiful stained-glass windows. But the most unique artistic element is the work of the Russian sculptor Lev Kerbel. Known for his sculptures of communist leaders Kerbel created the bronze statues of Mercedarian saints found here. These are his only known religious works in Spain.
The Parroquia Santa María de Cervellón stands as a place of worship and community. It blends historical significance artistic beauty and deep spiritual devotion. A true hidden treasure of Madrid.
