How would you like to explore a temple dedicated to a king from over a thousand years ago? I will tell you about Qianwang Temple. This temple stands as a tribute to Emperor Qian Liu. He was also known as Qianwang. People have worshiped him here for centuries. The temple is located at West Lake. It is now a popular scenic spot for visitors.

Hangzhou citizens built the Qianwang Temple in 1077. They wanted to commemorate the emperor. Qianwang is remembered for his leadership during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period. He ruled the Wuyue Kingdom. This area included parts of present-day Zhejiang Province and Shanghai. It also covered parts of Jiangsu and Fujian Provinces.

Qianwang focused on protecting his people. Hangzhou was on the Qiantang River. This river had the world’s largest tidal bore. The waves could be very dangerous. Qianwang and his successors built infrastructure to manage the water. They helped local farming thrive. They built their own “Great Wall” against the river.

Qianwang also supported the handicraft industry. Hangzhou’s ceramic craftsmanship flourished under his rule. The Yue Kiln became a major center for celadon production. Trade developed and Hangzhou prospered. Qianwang kept the kingdom peaceful. He avoided war. He didn’t want people to die.

The Qian family has a rich history. Many prominent people are descendants of Qianwang. These include Qian Xuesen. He was China’s “father of space technology.” Also, there was Qian Zhongshu. He was a great 20th-century scholar. And Qian Mu was a renowned scholar and writer.

Today the Qianwang Temple displays archives of the Qian Family. It hosts floral exhibitions. The temple also hosts an annual ritual. This ritual commemorates Qianwang. It promotes the family’s values. The family instructions emphasize education. They encourage descendants to contribute to society. The instructions promote moral character. They want people to build happy families. They want people to benefit others.

The worshipping ritual has ten procedures. Three hundred offspring strike a big bell 14 times. Each gong stands for Hangzhou and the 13 cities of the Wuyue Kingdom. Five grains and three meats are offered to the emperor. Holy water and soil from his birthplace are presented. Incense is burned to show respect. People pray for good luck. The offspring read a funeral oration. They sing a song eulogizing Qianwang.

If you want to learn more, visit the Qianwang Mausoleum. It is in Lin’an District. Qianwang, his successors, and the royal family are buried there. Original graves and stone statues remain. You can also see archways and tablets. Some building foundations are still there.

Qianwang’s legacy lives on. He is remembered as a wise ruler. He protected his people and fostered prosperity. His family’s values continue to inspire. The Qianwang Temple stands as a reminder of his contributions. It celebrates a significant figure in Chinese history.
