“Jangwi-dong, Panorama of Change in Urban Housing” is not just a title. It is a story etched in the very fabric of this Seoul neighborhood. Today, we explore Jangwi 3-dong. It is a place where time unfolds in layers of residences.

Jangwi 3-dong is in Seongbuk-gu. Its story is one of constant change and adaptation. This district mirrors Seoul’s rapid growth. It holds a unique residential culture. This culture blends housing styles from the 1950s to the present.

Before 1950, Jangwi-dong was a rural village. It followed its common rule called Jangwi since 1905. The Korean War brought rapid changes. From the late 1950s to the 1960s, large-scale housing complexes emerged. The Korean Housing Administration led this development. Restoring Housing, Revival Housing, and National Housing appeared in sequence.

Around the same time, Dongbang Life Insurance developed the Dongbang Housing Complex. This created a wealthy enclave for high-ranking military officials and celebrities in Gangbuk. However, this wealth shifted. The Gangnam area developed in the 1970s. Grand houses were replaced by multi-family dwellings.

Excluded from urban development since the 1980s, Jangwi-dong focused on low-rise, densely populated residential buildings. New town developments and urban regeneration projects marked another major shift in the past decade.

Jangwi 3-dong reveals much about Seoul’s urbanization. It showcases societal changes and spatial transformations. The Seoul Museum of History documented these changes in a report. It comprehensively describes the evolution of residential areas in northeast Seoul.

Imagine walking these streets decades ago. You would have seen rural landscapes slowly transforming. You’d witness the rise of new housing projects. You could observe the ebb and flow of wealth. Jangwi 3-dong is a living museum.

Today, Jangwi 3-dong stands as a testament to Seoul’s dynamic history. It is a place where the past and present intertwine. Here, the story of a city is written on its streets and in its homes.
