What a view don’t you think? This, my friends, is Gnojna Góra. You might be surprised by its less-than-appealing name. It literally translates to “Dung Hill.” Yes, you heard that right. Gnojna Góra was once the dumping ground for all of Old Town’s waste. For centuries, everything from chamber pots to food scraps ended up right here. Imagine the smell. This went on for centuries. The pile grew so large that you could even see its distinctive shape from miles away. Now, you might think that’s a disgusting claim to fame. But Gnojna Góra has a surprising twist. In the past, it was believed that burying oneself in the dump up to the neck could cure syphilis. Desperate times call for desperate measures I suppose. Thankfully, today, Gnojna Góra is a far cry from its smelly past. We’re standing on top of what was once a mountain of trash. Now it’s a beautiful viewpoint offering stunning views of the Vistula River and the Praga district. It’s amazing how something so, let’s say, unrefined, could transform into such a picturesque spot. Gnojna Góra stands as a reminder that even the most unpleasant aspects of history can be buried and transformed into something beautiful.
