Gazing up at the spiraling ramp, have you ever imagined a parking garage transformed into a cosmic journey? This is Docking Seoul. It’s not just an urban art space, but a testament to Seoul’s innovative spirit. Docking Seoul, once a conduit for cars heading to the old Seoul Station, sat dormant for nearly two decades. Abandoned in 2004 after the new KTX station opened, this circular ramp seemed destined for obscurity. Then, in 2022, the Seoul Metropolitan Government, as part of its “Seoul is a Museum” initiative, embarked on a mission to revitalize this forgotten space. They partnered with local artists and construction companies like Hanwha Engineering & Construction to create something truly unique. Docking Seoul was born. As you ascend the ramp, you’ll encounter seven distinct art installations spread across five sections. Artist Yang Jeong-wok’s “Moving Daily Life” greets you with digital displays resembling spaceship windows, their images shifting as you change perspective. Further along, Park Jiyoun’s “My Universe Color” bathes the tunnel in vibrant hues, transforming the ambiance with each color shift. At the ramp’s heart, a magnificent blue structure spirals upwards, evoking a galaxy reaching for the sky. This installation, Chung So-young’s “Deep Surface,” mirrors the birth of stars, its rings forming a celestial halo. As you continue, Kim Ju-hyeon’s “Net of Life,” a web of illuminated iron pipes, symbolizes the interconnectedness of individuals and society. Docking Seoul offers a blend of industrial charm and futuristic art. The original structure’s raw aesthetic intertwines with dynamic lighting and modern artworks, creating an experience that is both nostalgic and forward-looking. Docking Seoul invites you to connect with the city in a new way, to see the potential for art in unexpected places, and to embark on a journey from the mundane to the extraordinary.
