Do you feel that chill? Here, on Via dei Cipressi in Palermo, history whispers of a dark day. This is the site of the uccisione di Pietro Scaglione e Antonino Lorusso, 5 maggio 1971.

Pietro Scaglione, Chief Prosecutor of Palermo, was a man who struck fear into the hearts of the Mafia. He was an incorruptible magistrate of exceptional professional ability and absolute moral honesty. Scaglione relentlessly persecuted the Mafia.

Imagine the scene on May 5 1971. Scaglione and his loyal driver Antonio Lo Russo were returning from their daily visit to his wife’s tomb at the Cappuccini cemetery. A Fiat 850 pulled alongside their car. Gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets. Scaglione and Lo Russo died instantly.

The assassination marked a grim milestone. It was the first time since World War II that the Mafia had murdered an Italian magistrate. Scaglione’s death signaled a new era of brazen violence.

Scaglione’s career was marked by his pursuit of justice in Sicily’s most notorious cases. He investigated the Portella della Ginestra massacre. He probed the murders of union leaders Placido Rizzotto and Salvatore Carnevale. Scaglione even looked into the disappearance of journalist Mauro De Mauro.

After the Ciaculli massacre in 1963 Scaglione worked to dismantle Mafia organizations. His efforts led to the disruption of their networks. He believed that the Mafia had political origins. Scaglione sought to expose Mafia influence in public administration.

Paolo Borsellino later stated that the Mafia conducted a campaign to eliminate investigators who had an intuition. The Mafia knew they were isolated. Their deaths would delay discoveries.

Giovanni Falcone said that the murder of Scaglione was intended to demonstrate to all that Cosa Nostra was not intimidated by judicial repression. The message was clear. They were always ready to strike down anyone who stood in their way.

Even after his death the attempts to discredit Pietro Scaglione continued. But his legacy as a courageous and dedicated public servant remains. He also served as President of the Council of Patronage for assistance to the families of prisoners. His work earned him the Diploma of first grade for social redemption. In 1991 Scaglione was officially recognized as a magistrate who fell victim to duty and the Mafia.

The uccisione di Pietro Scaglione e Antonino Lorusso was a pivotal moment in the history of the fight against the Mafia. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who dared to challenge organized crime. The echoes of that tragic day still resonate in Palermo today.
