Once, while hiking near the peak of São Félix Hill, I stumbled upon something unexpected – remnants of ancient stone walls hidden among the gorse and heather. These weathered stones, I learned, were all that remained of a mysterious settlement that predated even the Roman era. This, my friends, is the legacy of Laundos, a place whose story is interwoven with the very fabric of this land. Laundos, officially documented as “Montis Lanutus” in 1033AD, whispers a history far older. Before written records, a pre-historic people chose this place, drawn to the strategic vantage point of São Félix Hill. Imagine them, a community of skilled artisans and resourceful farmers, crafting pottery, working with gold and defending their hilltop home. They chose Laundos for a reason. The fertile plains below provided sustenance, while the hilltop offered protection. These ancient inhabitants left behind more than just stones. A pair of exquisite gold earrings, known as the “Arrecadas de Laundos,” were unearthed here. These earrings, now displayed in the Soares dos Reis Museum in Porto, offer a glimpse into the artistry of Laundos’ earliest inhabitants. Laundos may appear unassuming at first glance, but look closer. It’s a place where whispers of the past linger in the wind that sweeps across the hilltop, a testament to the enduring spirit of those who called Laundos home.
