Here in Osdorf, before the Ladenzeile in der Bornheide, lies a captivating sculpture. It is the Große Oceanide. This bronze figure depicts a swimming woman in a stretched position. The Große Oceanide was created by the German sculptor Fritz Fleer in 1970.
Oceanides, daughters of Okeanos, symbolize the world’s rivers and streams. The Große Oceanide sculpture was commissioned as part of the “Kunst am Bau” program by SAGA.
Originally, the Große Oceanide hovered above a water basin. Sadly, this basin was converted into a flowerbed for cost-saving reasons. The sculpture now rests above mulch.
Fritz Fleer, born in 1921, passed away in 1997. He left behind a legacy of impressive sculptures. The Große Oceanide remains a testament to his talent.
Hamburg is a city brimming with art. The Große Oceanide adds to its cultural richness. It invites us to reflect on the relationship between art and nature. It also reminds us of the importance of supporting the arts in public spaces. This sculpture offers a moment of contemplation in the midst of daily life.
