Ever seen a building that whispers secrets? Right here before you stands the Bolshoy Dom also known as the Giant’s House. This imposing granite structure is more than just an office building. It’s a silent witness to a tumultuous past.
The Giant’s House wasn’t always home to the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Originally built between 1931 and 1932 it served as the headquarters of the OGPU the Soviet secret police. Think of the chilling atmosphere. Imagine the hushed footsteps. The weight of untold stories hangs heavy in the air.
This building played a significant role during Stalin’s reign. Many who entered its doors were never seen again. Even Vladimir Putin served here during his KGB years. The sheer scale of the building is breathtaking. Its Constructivist style reflects the era’s ambition and perhaps its ruthlessness. Architects Alexander Gegello Andrey Ol and Noi Trotsky designed this imposing structure.
Its location is strategic. It sits at the beginning of Liteyny Avenue a short distance from the Neva River. This was once the site of the Imperial Russian Old Armoury Building destroyed in 1917. The Giant’s House rose from its ashes a symbol of a new order.
Many urban legends surround the Giant’s House. Some whisper of extensive secret underground levels. Others claim it miraculously survived the Siege of Leningrad because German prisoners of war were housed on the top floor.
Today you can only admire the Giant’s House from the outside. You can’t enter. Yet its presence is undeniably powerful. It stands as a stark reminder of a complex and often brutal history. A place where shadows dance and secrets linger. A true Giant among buildings. It embodies the enduring strength and mysteries of Saint Petersburg.
