Atop a Doric column stands Henry Hudson. He surveys the river that bears his name. This is the Henry Hudson Monument a testament to a complicated legacy.

The Henry Hudson Monument wasn’t always here. Its creation was a long and winding journey. The idea began in 1906. Civic leaders planned a grand celebration. They wanted to commemorate Hudson’s voyage and Robert Fulton’s steamboat journey. They envisioned a monument a bridge connecting Manhattan and the Bronx.

Sculptor Karl Bitter was chosen. He started work on a bronze statue. But the project stalled. Funds dried up. Sadly Bitter died in an accident.

Decades later Robert Moses revived the project. Karl Gruppe a student of Bitter finished the statue. He also added reliefs showing Hudson’s commission and early fur trading. Finally in 1938 the Henry Hudson Monument was dedicated.

The monument is more than just a statue. It represents a pivotal moment in history. Hudson’s voyages opened up the area to European settlement. This had a profound impact on the Indigenous populations. The monument reminds us of this complex history. We should reflect on both its triumphs and tragedies.

The Henry Hudson Monument stands tall. It offers a view of the Hudson River. It silently witnesses the city’s ever-changing skyline. It is a lasting tribute to a man who changed history. A reminder of the enduring power of exploration and its lasting consequences. Remember this story the next time you visit the Henry Hudson Monument.
