“Now he’s home, at least in spirit.” These are the powerful words that capture the essence of Joseph Manna Park. This park is a tribute to a local hero. It honors those who sacrificed for their country.

Joseph Manna Park is a small triangle of land. It is less than an acre. It is located near the Staten Island Expressway. The park is named after Joseph Manna. He was a Navy radioman. He died in World War II. He served on the USS Duncan. The ship was sunk by Japanese shells near the Solomon Islands in 1943.

Manna grew up in Mariners Harbor. This is the same neighborhood where the park is located. He was only 17 when he enlisted. He needed his mother’s signature because he was so young. He was a seaman first class. Manna died at 18. His body was never recovered. There was no funeral. There was no memorial until this park was created.

The park features a monument to Manna. It includes a large rock with a plaque. American flags surround it. The park also honors two other sailors. These are Frank and Constantine Busso. They died in separate battles in the Pacific. Their memorials are marked by anchors.

Other plaques list the names of those who served in World War II. They were part of the Port of New York Authority. It is now the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

New York City acquired this property in 1958. It was used for the Staten Island Expressway. After construction, the land was reassigned to Parks in 1991. In 1992, Mayor David Dinkins named the park after Manna.

The Mariners Harbor Civic Association helped transform the space. It became a war memorial. In 1996, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani provided funds. These funds helped to renovate the steel fence around the park. The association also planted boxwoods, kale, and evergreen pines. They created a peaceful space to remember the fallen.

Joseph Manna Park is more than just a park. It is a place of remembrance. It is a tribute to those who served. It stands as a testament to their sacrifice. It ensures that their memory lives on. It is a reminder of the price of freedom. The park offers a quiet space for reflection. It allows visitors to honor the brave men and women. They gave their lives for their country.
