Whispering through the tall grass near Kobble Creek a story unfolds. Kobble Creek a rural locality in the Moreton Bay Region. It lies about 45 kilometers northwest of Brisbane. This peaceful creek has a rich history. It’s named after the creek itself. The name Kobble comes from the Waka language Garumngar dialect. Kabul means carpet snake.

Kobble Creek was once a thriving dairy farming community. Farmers also grew bananas and pineapples on the hillsides. The area supported a butter factory a primary school and a railway station. The railway station opened in 1919. The line reached its terminus at Dayboro in 1920.

Life in Kobble Creek changed dramatically. The construction of the North Pine Dam and Lake Samsonvale flooded much of the best farmland. Many farmers were forced to leave. Kobble Creek became a predominantly rural-dormitory zone. Farming greatly reduced.

Kobble Creek State School opened around 1881. It closed in 1954. It was located near the current Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade. The school’s name was sometimes spelled Cobble Creek State School.

The Garumngar people were the first settlers of this area. Kitty Delaney the last Indigenous person of the area died in 1922. She lived in Kobble Creek. Stone implements have been discovered at a campsite. These fragments suggest early Indigenous presence.

In the 1868 Crown Lands Act spurred settlement. New settlers arrived. Agriculture boomed. Farming included banana growing pig rearing and dairying. The Gold family became one of the most prominent families. They established their home near Kobble Creek around 1870. This home became the Samsonvale Post Office then a telephone exchange.

The construction of the Samsonvale Dam in 1973 had a huge impact. It’s been called the shadow of death. Many residents left. Today Kobble Creek retains its rural charm. Its history echoes in the names of its roads and the stories of its people. The creek itself remains a quiet witness to the passage of time. Its waters continue to flow a testament to the enduring spirit of this unique place.
