Can a single building hold the dreams of many communities? Here at the Salaam Community Centre and Masjid, the answer is a resounding yes. The Salaam Community Centre and Masjid isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the power of unity and shared faith. The story of Salaam Community Centre and Masjid began in 1984. A small group of Muslims, many of whom were converts, came together. They hailed from diverse backgrounds: the Caribbean, Africa, Malaysia, the Middle East, Uganda, and England. Their shared dream was a central hub for their community. This dream took root in a small, rented one-bedroom house on Claremont Road in Moss Side. As the community grew, so did the need for space. The congregation quickly outgrew the one-bedroom house. They moved to a two-bedroom flat on Rosebery Street. Even this larger space wasn’t enough. They annexed the neighboring flat, but the demand for their services continued to grow. The Salaam Community Centre and Masjid continued to expand. In 2002, the community formally established itself, driven by the desire for a dedicated prayer space and a place to learn about Islam. The increasing number of attendees highlighted the growing need for a larger, permanent home. The Salaam Community Centre and Masjid reached a milestone in 2004. It became a registered charity, solidifying its commitment to the community. The move to the current location at 42 Raby Street in 2010 marked a significant turning point. The two-story building was transformed. The ground floor houses offices, a women’s prayer hall, ablution areas, a kitchen, and storage. The first floor accommodates the main prayer hall and the Imam’s study. Today, the Salaam Community Centre and Masjid serves the diverse Muslim communities of Moss Side, Hulme, Rusholme, Whalley Range, and beyond. It’s a place for prayer, study, and community gatherings. It offers Quran classes for all ages and abilities, including the disabled. It hosts lectures, seminars, and even sewing classes. It acts as a vital resource. It addresses social and domestic issues within the community. The Salaam Community Centre and Masjid is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant hub, reflecting the diverse tapestry of its community. It continues to grow and evolve, driven by its original vision of peace, harmony, and social cohesion.
