Slipping through time, the Tunnel Pfaffenstein emerges. This 880-meter passage whispers tales of Regensburg’s past. The Tunnel Pfaffenstein opened in 1977. It cost 55 million Deutschmarks. The tunnel bores through the Winzerer Heights. It connects the Regensburg-Nord and Regensburg-Pfaffenstein junctions. The tunnel gets its name from the Regensburg district of Pfaffenstein. Two tubes carry the ceaseless flow of traffic. Each tube has two lanes. There is no hard shoulder. Heading south, the tunnel almost immediately joins the Pfaffenstein Danube Bridge. Within the city limits of Regensburg, including the Tunnel Pfaffenstein, the speed limit is restricted to 80 km/h. In 2004, a staggering 73,000 vehicles passed through the tunnel daily. The peak hourly traffic reached 4,000 vehicles. The Tunnel Pfaffenstein has become a bottleneck on the A93. Several traffic jams have highlighted this issue. One example is the “Mega-Stau” on October 18, 2002. Since April 2004, the “Rote Route” has provided a wide detour around Regensburg. This route is marked with a red dot going north. A red circle marks the route going south. These markers are on various signposts along the Autobahn and other connecting roads. The “Rote Route” follows a specific path from the Regensburg interchange. It goes via Beratzhausen junction, R11, St 2165, St 2235, the Burglengenfeld bypass, B15, and finally, the Ponholz junction. Police activate the “Rote Route” via traffic announcements when jams last longer than 1.5 hours. The tunnel’s construction used a sprayed concrete method. Irregular layers of varying strengths created difficulties during construction. Two major collapses occurred. Each tunnel tube has a cross-sectional area of 86 square meters. This area expands to between 139 and 149 square meters at the south portal. In early 2024, a feasibility study and initial planning contracts for the tunnel’s renovation began. It is considered a mega-project. The Autobahn GmbH launched a website dedicated to the renovation. The site states that construction is only expected after a Europe-wide tendering process for planning services and after the approval process. The Pfaffenstein Danube Bridge also needs to be replaced. This will add to the complexity of the project. The Tunnel Pfaffenstein stands as a vital artery for Regensburg. It serves as a silent testament to engineering and a vital link in the city’s bustling network.
