The rhythmic pulse of gospel music spills onto the street. It’s Sunday morning. The Community Church of God stands before you a testament to faith perseverance and community.
This isn’t just any church. The Community Church of God in Atlanta boasts a rich history. It began in 1966 a humble gathering in the home of Mr and Mrs Richard Riley. Pastor Rudolph Smith affectionately known as “Rabbi” and his wife Lady Edna were the driving force. Twice-monthly services were held in a mortuary chapel. Imagine the reverence in that unusual setting.
The congregation grew quickly. They moved to a home then to Hines Funeral Home chapel. In 1970 a major milestone arrived. They moved to their current location at 850 Cascade Avenue. Seven years later they paid off their mortgage a testament to their collective dedication.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 1978 the church embarked on another ambitious project a new sanctuary. Construction began in 1979 and the dedication followed in 1980. Pastor Smith even helped lay the concrete a symbol of his hands-on leadership. The mortgage for this impressive structure was paid off in 1986.
This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a center of community outreach. In 1983 they launched a food pantry. Later they acquired a thrift store transforming it into VICARS Volunteers in Community and Related Services in 1989. This reflects a deep commitment to serving those in need.
The baton of leadership was passed down through generations. In 1998 Michael A Smith succeeded his father. Under Michael’s guidance the church thrived making technological advances and acquiring more properties including the Rudolph Smith Ministry Center. His wife Rev Felecia Pearson Smith played a vital role leading community outreach programs including the transformation of the food pantry into a community marketplace.
In 2020 Dr Kevin W Earley became Senior Pastor. He navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. He strengthened the church’s virtual presence ensuring its continued impact.
The Community Church of God stands as a beacon of hope resilience and unwavering faith. It’s a place where history is made and community is nurtured. It’s a place where you can feel the energy of faith resonate through its walls and spill out onto the streets. It’s more than a building. It’s a living testament to faith.
