Established in 1925 the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics SWUFE stands proudly before you. Its history is rich and complex. It began as a small group of students and academics leaving St John’s University in Shanghai. They founded Kwang Hua University. This was during the May 30th Movement. The Second Sino-Japanese War forced a move to Chengdu in 1938. Many other universities also relocated west. After the war Kwang Hua University returned to Shanghai. The Chengdu campus however became Chenghua University. This later merged with other institutions forming the Sichuan Institute of Finance and Economics. For a time it was even known as Chengdu University. In 1980 the People’s Bank of China took over administration. This lasted until 2000 when the Ministry of Education assumed control. The university received its current name in 1985.

SWUFE’s rise to prominence is remarkable. It’s now a leading institution for finance business and economics. It boasts over 24000 students including many international ones. Its faculty numbers over 2000. This impressive institution has two campuses. The main Liulin campus is expansive. It covers around 264 acres. The Guanghua campus is smaller. It still holds historical significance. It is here in this very spot where the university first established a foothold in Chengdu.

The university’s reputation is international. In 2014 its School of Business Administration became the first in Western China accredited by the European Quality Improvement System. Rankings consistently place SWUFE highly among finance business and economics universities both nationally and internationally. For instance it holds top rankings in Western China. It has high global rankings too. The U.S News and World Report ranks it highly in Asia and globally.

SWUFE’s achievements extend beyond teaching. It boasts cutting-edge research institutes. The Institute of Financial Studies is noteworthy. It’s focused on global financial studies and China’s financial development. The China Household Finance Survey is another key initiative. This provides valuable data for research and policy making. The university’s libraries and museums are impressive too. The library is one of the largest in Southwest China. Its Money and Securities Museum showcases a vast collection of financial items. It is one of the earliest of its kind.

The Southwestern University of Finance and Economics has strong international ties. It cooperates with institutions across the globe. Its international programs attract students from around the world. It proudly trains thousands of students annually. This is a place where future financial leaders are educated.
