Ever imagine a church rising from a simple field? Resurrection Lutheran Church stands here as a testament to such growth. In the mid-20th century, San Diego’s South Bay boomed. Aerospace industries drew people from all over, creating a need for community spaces. Resurrection Lutheran Church emerged from this need. It was officially organized in October 1951. The first congregation had only 99 members, led by Pastor Lyle Gangsei. Their first gathering place was a humble chapel, built in 1952. This chapel later became Rygh Hall, named after the church’s second pastor. By the early 1960s, the congregation had outgrown the small chapel. They broke ground on a new sanctuary in 1963. This sanctuary, dedicated in 1964, is the building we see today. Resurrection Lutheran Church, or RLC as it’s often called, peaked at over 1,800 members in 1965. It continues to serve the community as part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The church’s journey reflects the growth and changing needs of the South Bay community. It stands as a reminder of how a small seed of faith can blossom into a vibrant hub.
