“Buzz” into a world where creepy meets captivating here at the Audubon Insectarium. It is not just a museum. The Audubon Insectarium is an immersive journey into the fascinating realm of insects.

Originally opened in June 2008, the Audubon Insectarium has become a cornerstone of the Audubon Nature Institute complex. It was once located in the U.S. Custom House. Now, it has found a new home at the Audubon Aquarium since June 8, 2023.

The Insectarium boasts over 50 live exhibits. There are numerous multimedia elements, too. At 23000 square feet, it is the largest free-standing American museum dedicated to insects.

Step inside. Prepare to be amazed by the sheer diversity of the insect world. Wander through exhibits showcasing everything from delicate butterflies to giant beetles. You can learn about their life cycles, behaviors, and ecological roles.

Did you know the deadliest insect in the world is the mosquito? It kills 750000 people every year. And get this. Crickets chirp by stridulation, rubbing body parts together. Some insects even have ears on their legs, thorax, or abdomen.

Feeling adventurous? Why not sample some insect cuisine. The Audubon Insectarium offers a chance to taste specially prepared insects.

Don’t miss the Butterflies in Flight exhibit. This tropical wonderland is filled with colorful butterflies and lush plants. Free-flying finches add their melodies to the scene. It is an immersive experience for all the senses.

The Audubon Insectarium is not just for kids. Adults will find plenty to fascinate them as well. The museum offers a unique perspective on the natural world.

In 2009, the Audubon Insectarium even received the Thea Award. This was for Outstanding Achievement in a Science Center. It shows the museum’s commitment to education and entertainment.

Unfortunately, the Insectarium faced a temporary closure in September 2020 due to revenue shortages. This was caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. But it has found a new location.

Before you leave the Audubon Insectarium, take a moment to appreciate the incredible world of insects. From their vital role in ecosystems to their unique adaptations, insects are essential. The Audubon Insectarium is a testament to the beauty and complexity of the natural world. It offers an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
