Long ago, a humble wooden church graced this very spot. Parafia św. Wawrzyńca na Reducie Wolskiej has stood here for centuries, its story interwoven with the tumultuous history of Warsaw. Antipope John XXIII first mentioned it in 1412. The church began as a branch of St. John’s Cathedral. It wasn’t until 1611 that Parafia św. Wawrzyńca na Reducie Wolskiej became a parish in its own right. Sadly, the Swedish army destroyed the original wooden structure during the Deluge. But, like a phoenix from the ashes, it was rebuilt. In 1695, Queen Marie Casimire Louise de La Grange d’Arquien generously funded a new church. However, her plans faced a setback upon King John III Sobieski’s death, halting construction for years. The church we see today, designed by Joachim Daniel Jauch and later completed by Johann Friedrich Knöbel, was finally finished in 1755. Despite its peaceful beginnings, Parafia św. Wawrzyńca na Reducie Wolskiej faced turmoil. It was damaged during the Siege of Warsaw in 1794 and again in 1831 when it was used as a fort. The Russians, after seizing control, transformed the church into an Orthodox one, even placing artillery on its walls to commemorate their victory. In 1915, the church was returned to its Catholic roots. However, tragedy struck again during the Warsaw Uprising when the Nazis used it for the horrific Wola massacre and then burned it down. Today, Parafia św. Wawrzyńca na Reducie Wolskiej stands as a symbol of resilience, rebuilt once more to serve its community. Remember its enduring presence, a testament to faith and spirit that has weathered centuries of change.
