Why are cemeteries often designed like parks? At Kommunalfriedhof Lünen-Niederaden, this design isn’t accidental. Kommunalfriedhof Lünen-Niederaden is one of three municipally managed cemeteries in Lünen, covering a combined area of approximately 22 hectares. These cemeteries, including Altlünen and Brambauer, are designed like parks, offering a serene space for remembrance and reflection. Kommunalfriedhof Lünen-Niederaden even has a designated Muslim burial ground. A poignant event occurred at Kommunalfriedhof Lünen-Niederaden on August 20, 2024. The urn burial field in Section I, Urn Field 3, plots 1 through 24, was decommissioned after its 20-year Ruhezeit, or resting period, expired. Family members were given the opportunity to remove plants and memorials before the grounds were returned to common use. The WBL staff oversee approximately 650 burials annually across these cemeteries. They also maintain the grounds, from planting and lawn care to path upkeep and leaf collection. Since 2017, they’ve dedicated special attention to the urn gardens. They fill these gardens with diverse perennials, grasses, and bulbs.
