Gazing upon Gayarre Place, can you sense the echoes of a world’s fair? This small, triangular park, nestled on the edge of Tremé, holds a piece of New Orleans’ history. Gayarre Place isn’t just green space. It’s a time capsule, a monument to both ambition and artistry. The centerpiece, a statue known as “Peace, the Genius of History,” first graced the grounds of the 1884 World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition in Audubon Park. Imagine the bustle of the fair, the marvels on display. This statue, crafted from terracotta, stood as a testament to the material’s versatility. A local, George Dunbar, was so captivated by the statue that he purchased it after the fair. He then generously donated it to the city. In 1886, Gayarre Place, complete with its newly acquired monument, was dedicated to the historian Charles Gayarré. The original terracotta statue, sadly, fell victim to vandalism in 1938. The current marble and cement statue stands in its place, a resilient echo of the original vision. The park itself is a peaceful haven. A concrete circle embraces the monument, with paths radiating outwards. Benches offer a place to rest and reflect. Trees and plantings frame the space. Though small, Gayarre Place offers a glimpse into New Orleans’ rich past. It reminds us that even amidst progress and change, beauty and history endure.
