The whispers of history echo here. Before us stands Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Thiên Bình a testament to faith and community. This isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a living archive of the Thiên Bình parish’s journey. Imagine the stories etched into each headstone.
Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Thiên Bình began its journey not as a cemetery but as a small community. In 1972 Father Nguyen Khang Hy gathered the people of Tan Mai Tam Hiep and Tam Phuoc Long Thanh. They built a small prayer space. It was the seed from which Thiên Bình would grow. Three years later Father Nguyen Quang Toan took charge. The community flourished under his guidance.
In 1976 this small prayer space officially became a parish. Father Tran Van Tien was appointed. He saw the need for a proper church. He oversaw the construction of a new building. It measured a modest 28 meters by 12 meters. A simple structure but a significant step for the growing congregation. They dedicated this new church to Heaven’s Peace. This is the origin of the name Thiên Bình.
In 1993 Father Paolo Maria officially changed the parish’s name to Giáo xứ Thiên Bình. A year later Father Giuse Tran Van Ham became its pastor. He worked tirelessly. He built a new school to provide education. A place of learning and growth alongside their spiritual home.
Then came Father Dam minh Nguyen Trung Chan in 2003. His tenure saw continued growth. He oversaw the construction of a new church building in 2008-2009. The old church remained but the new church offered a larger and more modern space. The community continued to grow. Their faith remained strong.
Father Giuse Nguyen Kim Dinh guided the parish from 2012 to 2022. Under his leadership the community reached new heights. In 2022 they welcomed Father Vinh Son Hoang Phong Vu. He continues to serve the parish.
Nghĩa trang Giáo xứ Thiên Bình is more than just a resting place. It’s a reflection of resilience faith and community. It bears witness to the dedication of generations of priests and parishioners. Each headstone tells a story. Each name represents a life lived within the embrace of the Thiên Bình community. Their legacy lives on. The church stands tall a beacon of hope in the heart of Saigon.
