Tucked away on Lê Thánh Tông Street, the Vietnam National University Central Institute for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, or VNU-CRES as it’s often called, holds a story as rich and layered as the ecosystems it studies. The VNU-CRES wasn’t built overnight. Its roots stretch back to 1985, a time of change and renewal in Vietnam. The Centre for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies was established under the former University of Hanoi. Later, it merged with the Mangrove Ecosystem Research Centre of Hanoi University of Education. This union, in 1995, created the foundation of what we know today as VNU-CRES. Fast forward to 2016, a pivotal year for VNU-CRES. The Prime Minister officially recognized it as a separate legal entity within Vietnam National University, Hanoi. This marked a significant step, acknowledging the institute’s vital role in environmental research and education. VNU-CRES isn’t just an academic institution. It’s a vibrant hub of activity, tackling crucial issues. Its research spans a vast spectrum, from biodiversity conservation to climate change, sustainable development, and environmental protection. The institute offers a range of training programs. These programs, from master’s and doctoral degrees to short courses, equip future generations with the knowledge and skills to address environmental challenges. VNU-CRES collaborates with organizations worldwide. It plays an active role in the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and serves as a Scientific Authority of CITES Vietnam. This international collaboration underscores its commitment to global environmental issues. Its work has earned international recognition. VNU-CRES has received prestigious awards like the UNEP Global 500 Award and the Blue Planet Prize. These accolades highlight its important contributions to environmental protection and sustainability. So, as you stand before VNU-CRES, remember that it represents more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies decades of dedication, groundbreaking research, and a passionate commitment to safeguarding our planet. It is a place where knowledge is cultivated, partnerships are forged, and solutions for a sustainable future are explored.
