Picture this a grand Victorian Gothic church. This is Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. It stands proudly on East 62nd Street between Second and Third Avenues. A true gem in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church wasn’t always a Catholic sanctuary. Built in 1886-87 for a hefty $200000 it initially served a German-speaking congregation. It later became Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Finally in 1918 it found its true calling as the home of the Italian Madonna della Pace parish. The church is a stunning example of Victorian Gothic architecture. It’s part of the Treadwell Farm Historic District. This district was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1967.

Interestingly Our Lady Queen of Peace Church wasn’t always destined to remain a Catholic Church. In 2014 the Archdiocese announced a merger. Our Lady of Peace was slated to merge with St John the Evangelist Church. However in 2017 with Pope Francis’ blessing a surprising turn of events occurred. The Archdiocese sold Our Lady Queen of Peace Church to the Egyptian Christian Coptic Orthodox Church community. It was then renamed St Mary & St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church. The first Coptic service was held on March 5 2017. This marks a significant chapter in the church’s rich and ever-evolving history. A history full of vibrant communities and transitions.

The church’s transformation reflects the ever-changing face of New York City. Our Lady Queen of Peace’s story is a testament to faith and adaptation. It’s a story of community resilience and the enduring power of sacred spaces. It’s a story that continues to unfold even today.

So stand here for a moment. Imagine the countless prayers whispered within these walls. Feel the weight of history that permeates every stone. This is Our Lady Queen of Peace Church a place of worship that has evolved and yet remains a beacon of faith in the heart of Manhattan.
