How about a journey through time? Let’s explore the story of Hochschule 21. It is a private university with a rich history.

Hochschule 21 started in 2004. But its roots stretch back to 1875. It began as the Technikum, founded by the Buxtehude Magistrat. This institution offered technical education. It included schools for building trades, architecture, carpentry and painting.

Max Hittenkofer, the first director, introduced innovative teaching methods. Conflicts with the Prussian government led to Hittenkofer’s departure in 1890. The school became a Royal Building Trade School. Later it was renamed the State Engineering School for Construction. In 1971, it transformed into the Fachhochschule Nordostniedersachsen.

The Fachhochschule Nordostniedersachsen was dissolved. But the region rallied to preserve higher education. This led to the creation of Hochschule 21. It was founded through a private public partnership.

Hochschule 21 continues the tradition of architecture and civil engineering. It emphasizes dual bachelor’s programs. These combine theory and practice. The university has expanded its offerings. It includes health and technology programs. The first graduates earned their degrees in 2008.

The name ‘hochschule 21’ has two meanings. The first part refers to its location. The Elbe-Weser region belongs to postal code region 21. The second part highlights the Bologna Process. This process aimed to create a unified European higher education system. It introduced standardized degrees. It also made study achievements transparent.

Hochschule 21 emphasizes practical experience. Dual study programs alternate between theory and practice every three months. This approach focuses on career readiness. Some students are company employees. Others find partner companies through the university. Hochschule 21 works with around 1000 companies. These include engineering firms and construction companies. Technology companies offer practical placements. Health programs integrate training with Elbe Kliniken and Asklepios Clinics. Students often get hired by their partner companies after graduation.

The university offers further education seminars. These are in construction and healthcare. Students can also earn qualifications. These include certifications for trainers, construction draftsmen, and real estate agents. This happens through cooperation with the Stade Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

Hochschule 21 has modern facilities. These support teaching and research. They include labs for building materials, geotechnics, electrical engineering. There are also labs for production technology, mechatronics, robotics. A model workshop completes the facilities.

Hochschule 21 offers bachelor’s degrees in different departments. These include Architecture, Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering. Health programs include Nursing and Physiotherapy. Engineering programs include Mechatronics and Building Technology.

All degrees from Hochschule 21 are state-recognized. Accreditation ensures the quality of teaching. The German Council of Science and Humanities gave Hochschule 21 a positive review. It acknowledged its role in training professionals for the region. The university is well-suited to the needs of small and medium sized businesses.

Hochschule 21 is mainly funded by tuition fees and third-party funding. The privatization of a public university was a first here. It made Hochschule 21 a pioneer.

The hochschule 21 gGmbH is the supporting organization. Its shareholders include public entities. These are cities and districts. Other shareholders are chambers of commerce. Banks, the Association of Lower Saxon Cities and Municipalities are also shareholders.

So, as you stand here, remember the journey of Hochschule 21. It began as a technical school. It transformed into a modern university. It embodies the spirit of innovation and regional commitment.
