Behold Hadrian’s Arch a gateway through time. It stands here near Syntagma Square. It is between the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The Arch of Hadrian marks a symbolic line. It divides the ancient city of Athens from Hadrian’s new city.

Construction began in 131 AD. Athenians wanted to honor Emperor Hadrian. They thanked him for his gifts to the city. The architect remains unknown to this day.

This triumphal arch is made of Pentelic marble. It is 18 meters high. It is 12.5 meters wide and 2.3 meters deep. Its design mirrors other Roman arches. Pilasters of the Corinthian order crown it. The Arch of Hadrian is fully symmetrical.

The monument has two layers. An arched gate sits at the center of the lower layer. People still pass through it today. Columns once connected the two layers. These columns no longer exist.

Inscriptions are carved into the architrave. One faces the Acropolis. It reads “This is Athens the ancient city of Theseus.” The other faces the new city. It proclaims “This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus”. Emperor Hadrian expanded Athens. The ancient city formed new districts.

Hadrian’s Arch has survived remarkably well. It was never fully protected. Pollution has caused some discoloration. The inscriptions have suffered some degradation.

Hadrian’s Arch stood on a road. This road linked Athens’ city center to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Citizens erected the arch in 132 AD. They honored Hadrian’s many benefactions. He finished the Temple of Olympian Zeus for example.

Admire this 2nd-century gate. Try to read the two inscriptions. The arch symbolizes continuity and change. It acknowledges Athens’ rich history. It also celebrates its Roman present. Hadrian’s Arch embodies cultural exchange and architectural innovation.

Hadrian’s Arch is accessible 24/7. There is no entry fee. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon. The lighting is better for photography then.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is nearby. The Acropolis of Athens is also close. The Roman Agora awaits exploration. The National Garden offers an escape. Hadrian’s Arch is a testament to Roman influence. It blends Greek and Roman legacies. It invites us to explore Athens’ layered past.
