Was Dionysius the Areopagite truly converted by Paul’s sermon? This is a question that lingers as we stand before a place linked to his name. Let’s explore the story of Agios Dionysios, an Athenian judge turned saint. Agios Dionysios, also known as Dionysius the Areopagite, lived in the first century. He was a judge at the Areopagus Court in Athens.

Acts 17:34 tells us about his conversion to Christianity. The Apostle Paul’s preaching stirred him. “Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite”.

Following his conversion, Agios Dionysios became the first Bishop of Athens. Some consider him the second, after Hierotheus. The Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches venerate him as a saint. He’s also Athens’ patron saint. Judges and the judiciary see him as their protector. His memory is celebrated every October 3rd.

Later, writings of mystical nature were ascribed to Agios Dionysios. The author is now known as Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. Some scholars argue for the writings’ authenticity. They cite internal details and citations predating Proclus.

Agios Dionysios is sometimes confused with Dionysius, the first Bishop of Paris. However, this is a mistake that is now ignored. Each saint is commemorated on their own day.

In Athens, two large churches bear his name. One is in Kolonaki, on Skoufa Street. The other is the Catholic Metropolis of Athens, on Panepistimiou Street. The walkway around the Acropolis also bears his name. It passes through the Areios Pagos rock.

Agios Dionysios is also the patron saint of Gargaliani of Messenia. A village in Heraklion, Crete, is named after him. It is the only village on Crete with a church honoring Agios Dionysios Areopagitis.

While we may never know the full impact of Paul’s words on Agios Dionysios, his legacy remains. He embodies faith, justice, and the enduring power of transformation.
