“Lights out” is not just a phrase here. It’s a possible reality during rehearsals in Collins Hall. Let’s explore this fascinating building at Fordham University. Collins Hall holds stories within its walls. It might even have a ghost.

Collins Hall has a unique history. It was initially intended to be the Fordham Law School building. In 1905, thirteen students were ready to attend the newly established Fordham Law School. The College of Saint Francis Xavier was to be the Law School’s first home. But Xavier’s enrollment increased unexpectedly. The Law School was denied facilities there. Father Collins, Fordham University’s President, made a decision. He opened the Law School on the Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx.

Collins Hall wasn’t always what it is today. Legend says that the exterior was built first. The interior was added later. Notice how the staircases don’t line up with the windows. Old photos reveal a grand theater. It had balcony seating and endless architectural details. Over the years, the balcony was dismantled. The theater slowly fell into disrepair. Collins Hall’s physical appearance differs greatly from how people remember it.

Today, Collins Hall houses a standard theater. It also has a blackbox theatre. Plus, I believe the philosophy offices are here too.

But there’s more to Collins Hall than meets the eye. Some say it’s haunted. Students and faculty have reported seeing a man walking around the balconies. This ghostly figure is often blamed for things being rearranged. Items may be moved backstage before performances.

A 2010 article in the Ram suggests the ghost is Father Collins. He was the university president when the building was constructed. However, a 2014 article on theramrealm.com tells of a different spirit. It mentions an anonymous student who speaks of Johnny Collins. This ghost supposedly haunts Collins Auditorium. The student says, “Johnny is harmless. But he likes to make his presence known.” She adds, “It can be frustrating when we’re practicing. Then the lights just shut off.” Despite the hauntings, she enjoys spending time in Collins Hall. She thinks “Johnny likes the company.”

Whether it’s Father Collins or Johnny Collins, the ghost adds to the Hall’s mystique. It’s hard to say who a ghost is. Unless they tell you or you see them. Even then, they could be lying.

Despite its quirks and potential spectral residents, Collins Hall remains a beloved space. It’s a place where memories are made. Collins Hall is where students find their passions. It’s where they build lasting relationships. It’s more than just a building. It’s a sanctuary for many.

So, the next time you’re in Collins Hall, listen closely. You might just hear a ghostly footstep or see a light flicker. Who knows, you might even meet Johnny Collins himself.
