“Heroes of our salvation history” echoes in the air around St. Peters Church. This sacred space has been a cornerstone of faith in Accra. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Roman Catholic community.
St. Peters Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living embodiment of faith. The story of St. Peters Church intertwines with the broader narrative of the Catholic Church in Ghana. The then Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev. William T. Porter, SMA, and his Auxiliary Bishop, Most Rev. John K. Amissah recognized a growing need.
Many other leaders also contributed to the vision. Most Rev. Joseph Oliver Bowers, SVD of Accra also had an impact. Most Rev. Anthony Konings, SMA, of Keta helped. Most Rev. Andrew Van Den Bronk, SMA, of Kumasi assisted.
The nearby Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra is another place of worship. It shows the religious landscape of the city. St. Peters Church offers a unique spiritual experience. The Holy Spirit Cathedral is also a Roman Catholic Cathedral.
Consider the dedication and commitment required to establish a church. St. Peters Church has played a role in the formation of religious leaders. St. Peter’s Regional Seminary saw its first priestly ordination at Bekwai. Bishop Andrew Van Den Bronk invited Bishop J. K. Amissah to ordain Deacon Michael Kweku DeGraft. This ordination to the priesthood took place on August 15, 1957.
Imagine the early days of St. Peter’s Seminary. The first group of seminarians moved from Amisano to Pedu Seminary. This happened on March 12, 1957. It was a week after Ghana’s Independence.
The beautification of the Pedu campus developed through tree-planting. Even nursing and planting of grass contributed to the atmosphere. The late Rev. Fr. Francis Eboyi-Anza wrote about manual labor. Members of staff were equally involved.
Later, St. Peter’s Regional Seminary established a relationship with the University of Ghana. This allowed Seminarians to obtain a diploma in Theology.
The history of St. Peters Church includes challenges. Short durations of rectors and constant transfers of staff members affected the formation program.
The lay faithful have played a vital role in the life of the seminary. Their commitment supports the seminary. It helps them to maintain the library. It also helps them to attract the right kind of teachers.
St. Peters Church stands as a reminder of faith. It embodies community. It shows the commitment to religious education. The church will continue to shape the spiritual lives of many.
