A chance encounter changed everything. This is the story of the Jewish Institute for the Blind. Right here in Jerusalem.
In 1902 a merchant witnessed a heartbreaking scene. A blind child almost trampled by camels. The merchant’s compassion sparked an idea. He couldn’t ignore the plight of this child and many others like him. The Jerusalem Institute for the Blind or JIB was born. It started small. But grew into a beacon of hope. A Jerusalem landmark in Kiryat Moshe.
JIB wasn’t just a school. It was a lifeline. It taught children essential life skills. It fostered independence and self-esteem. It changed the narrative around blindness. Children were encouraged to overcome their challenges. Not let blindness define them. JIB believed in their potential. They wanted them to lead dignified meaningful lives.
The institute’s impact is remarkable. Stories of transformation abound. Maoz a completely dependent 12th grader gained independence. He now has a profession in medical massage. Daniel initially struggled to accept his blindness. He discovered a passion for technology. He’s now a full-time army volunteer. Dina a new immigrant from India learned Braille. She found her voice through music. Nava a previously homebound young woman now participates in national service. She helps others. Dima a refugee from Ukraine found friendship and support. He’s learning Hebrew and thriving. Hagai who withdrew after losing his sight found solace. He now copes better. His school performance improved.
JIB’s success extends beyond individual stories. A recent Paralympic team brought home a bronze medal. The institute shares its expertise internationally. The Abraham Accords opened doors. JIB now collaborates with Arab countries. This is a testament to their remarkable work.
More than a school JIB is a symbol of hope. It’s a community a family. It proves that with support and encouragement individuals with disabilities can achieve their dreams. They can become contributing members of society. This is the legacy of the Jewish Institute for the Blind. A legacy built on compassion determination and the unwavering belief in the human spirit. A legacy you can see all around you here.
