Have you ever imagined life inside a granite fortress? Welcome to Fort Tompkins a significant part of Staten Island’s history. Built between 1859 and 1876 this imposing structure was designed to work in tandem with Battery Weed. Its purpose? To defend against landward attacks. Can you picture soldiers rushing up the hill only to face Fort Tompkins’ dry moat? Those unfortunate enough to enter would’ve been caught in a deadly crossfire. This wasn’t just any fort. Fort Tompkins served as barracks housing over 500 soldiers. It boasted mess halls storage stables even a library and gymnasium. Each squad room held ten men. Later uses included offices storage classrooms a museum and briefly a minimum-security federal prison. Fort Tompkins’ history is fascinating. Did you know it’s named after New York Governor and Vice President Daniel Tompkins? The original fort was never completed. Rifled artillery made masonry forts obsolete. Only one gun was ever installed in the fort. It eventually became a large enlisted men’s barracks. The parade ground once grassy is now largely paved. While the upper levels are inaccessible today you can still explore the lower level on a rare National Park Service ranger tour. Imagine wandering through rooms designed for artillery but converted into living quarters furnished with bunks. You can also explore an underground tunnel leading to a counterscarp gallery. This mini-fort offers rifle ports for soldiers to shoot at any enemy in the moat. The main fort could also fire into the moat creating an inescapable crossfire. Soldiers could travel between the gallery and the fort through the underground passageway. Nearby an observation plaza provides stunning views of Battery Weed and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge at night. Fort Tompkins stands as a testament to military history. Its story echoes through its walls. It reminds us of the changing nature of warfare and the fort’s diverse roles over time. Today this impressive landmark is part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Its legacy continues to attract visitors who wish to explore its fascinating past. It is a unique glimpse into New York City’s rich and complex history.
