Ahoy mateys Welcome to Pirate Contemporary Art. Pirate Contemporary Art isn’t your grandpappy’s stuffy art gallery. It’s a Denver institution a vibrant member-run cooperative that’s been a haven for cutting-edge contemporary art since 1980.
Imagine a group of friends fresh out of Metropolitan State University. They dreamed of showing their art but Denver’s gallery scene was lacking. So they decided to chart their own course. They raised their own funds and launched Pirate a true art oasis.
Their first gallery was a humble space two small rooms in a downtown Denver building. Rent was a mere $100 a month. Their punk rock attitude and Jolly Roger logo were as bold as the art they displayed.
They moved to the Highlands neighborhood and then to Navajo Street where they thrived for 35 years. They hosted audacious exhibitions and community events including a popular Dia de los Muertos celebration. They championed local artists provided a platform for the unrepresented and even offered studio space.
But even the most daring pirate ship must sometimes change course. Rising rents forced Pirate to set sail for new horizons in Lakewood. The move was bittersweet but Pirate persists. It continues its mission to showcase the best of Denver’s art scene.
Today Pirate Contemporary Art stands as a testament to artistic perseverance a beacon for creativity and a true Denver legend. Their new location continues the legacy of bold art and community spirit. So raise a glass to Pirate Contemporary Art may its creative spirit sail on.
