Founded in 1882 Old Ship-Zion Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. This wasn’t always its location though. The congregation moved several times before finding its home. For decades it grew stronger.

Reverend Horace Wayland a former slave from Virginia founded Old Ship-Zion Baptist Church. He was a key figure in establishing Baptist churches across Philadelphia and even one in Camden. Wayland’s legacy laid the groundwork for the church’s future growth and influence.

The church gained significant prominence under Reverend Leon Howard Sullivan. His 38-year pastorate from 1950 to 1988 transformed Old Ship-Zion Baptist Church. He moved the church to its current location. This was the northwest corner of Broad and Venango Streets. The building had previously served as St Paul’s Reformed Episcopal Church. In 1969 Sullivan acquired the former Trinity Reformed Church across the street. It served as an annex for church programs. A fire destroyed the original annex. A new building replaced it in 1973.

Sullivan was much more than a pastor. He was a civil rights leader. He championed social justice. His initiatives included the Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America (OIC). OIC provided job training to Black youth. He also founded Zion Investment Association. It invested in businesses led by African American entrepreneurs. He even spearheaded the construction of Progress Plaza. It was the nation’s first Black-owned shopping center. His influence extended to corporate America. He became the first African American director of a major corporation General Motors. He used this position to pressure South Africa over apartheid. During his leadership membership peaked at 6000.

Old Ship-Zion Baptist Church’s history is intertwined with the vibrant life of North Philadelphia. The church remains a central hub for the community. It provides essential services and continues the legacy of Reverend Sullivan. This is a church that has continuously adapted and grown. It serves as an enduring symbol of faith perseverance and social justice. It embodies the spirit of its founders and pastors. Its impact extends far beyond its walls.
