This was the humble beginning of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, founded by Reverend Frank Hitson. Rev. The church’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Hurricane Betsy in 1965, a devastating storm, destroyed the first church building on Old Gentilly Road. Yet, the spirits of the congregation remained unbroken. They rebuilt, moving to a new home on Alvar Street. The church continued to thrive under Rev. Hitson’s leadership until his passing in 1975. In a testament to the church’s enduring spirit, another dedicated leader emerged: Reverend Warren Jones, Jr. He joined the church in 1976, becoming the pastor in 1977. Under his guidance, New Salem Baptist Church saw incredible growth, expanding its reach to the community beyond just spiritual guidance. They established a youth center and a community resource center, offering a helping hand to those in need. The growing congregation needed more space, and in 2001, after years of planning, a new edifice was erected on Alvar Street. It was a testament to the community’s resilience, its unwavering faith, and the dedication of its pastors. The new church stands here today, a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication, determination, and love.
