Remember this place. The Silvio Meier Gedenkstelle Plaque stands as a stark reminder. It marks a tragic event. It also honors a life dedicated to fighting injustice.

Silvio Meier was born in Quedlinburg in 1965. He moved to East Berlin in 1986. There, he became active in the DDR opposition movement. He engaged himself in structures against the regime. Meier co-founded the Kirche von Unten and the Umweltbibliothek. The Zionskirche was one of the most important meeting points. It was a significant spot for the late DDR opposition movement.

Even early in his activism, Silvio Meier confronted right-wing violence. He organized a concert at the Zionskirche. It was attacked by Neonazis in 1987. This attack marked a turning point. People started to notice right-wing extremist movements in the DDR. Before then, the leadership largely ignored them.

After the fall of the DDR, Silvio Meier became part of Berlin’s squatter scene. He lived in a house on Schreinerstraße. He also worked in an alternative print shop.

Just months before his murder, Silvio Meier spoke about right-wing hostility. He described attacks against squatters. He noted that they quickly occupied houses. Because of this, they became targets for Nazis, fascists and hooligans.

In November 1992, Silvio Meier was murdered. He was just 27 years old. A group of Neonazis stabbed him at the Samariterstraße subway station. The perpetrators roamed around that night. They sought to inflict violence on anyone who didn’t fit their dehumanizing world view.

Silvio Meier and some friends encountered eight right-wing extremist youths. This happened at the U-Bahn station. The neonazis pulled knives and attacked the group. Meier was stabbed multiple times. Two of his companions were seriously injured. Witnesses reported hearing the phrase: Now we’ve shown you left-wing pigs.

The Berlin LKA quickly recognized the murder as politically motivated. However, police initially avoided publicly discussing the political background. Instead, they spoke of two rival youth groups. Friends immediately recognized the right-wing extremist motive. They brought this version to the public’s attention.

Silvio Meier was murdered because of his antifascist stance. He clearly belonged to the alternative squatter scene. This was an enemy image of the extreme right. Though the defendants didn’t hide their right-wing views, the trial gave little attention to the political aspects.

In memory of Silvio Meier, a broad culture of remembrance has been established. Those involved keep his memory alive. They also act in his name against right-wing extremism and misanthropy.

The Silvio Meier Gedenkstelle Plaque serves as a powerful reminder. It stands for the ongoing fight against hate and violence. It embodies the enduring hope for a more just world. The plaque has been damaged and stolen multiple times. In 2007, the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe firmly anchored it in concrete.

Since 2016, the district has awarded the Silvio Meier Prize. It honors people who stand up against right-wing extremism and discrimination.
