“Mother of the bond of love.” That’s what some call Saint Monica. Today we are standing in front of the Parroquia de Santa Mónica in Madrid. It stands as a testament to faith and community. This discreet church resides in the Barrio de Salamanca. It sits on Calle Príncipe de Vergara near General Oraa. Avenida de América is also nearby.

Parroquia de Santa Mónica belongs to the Agustinos Recoletos order. Its facade features exposed brick. Look up. You can see two towers that appear almost identical. Inside Parroquia de Santa Mónica two images stand out. One is of Jesus Christ Crucified. The other depicts Santa Mónica.

The Comunidad de Madres Cristianas Santa Mónica finds its spiritual roots here. It is an association recognized by church authorities. This organization unites Christian mothers. The Order of Agustinos Recoletos guides its spirituality.

The association seeks to strengthen faith among its members. It provides ongoing formation for mothers. They learn to nurture their faith. They pray for the faith of their children and others. Their goal is to inspire faith in future generations. The association draws inspiration from the spirituality of the Familia Agustiniana. This means living the Gospel according to Saint Augustine. Saint Monica is essential to understanding Saint Augustine. Without her, there would be no Augustine.

Padre Lorenzo Infante initiated this devotion. He organized the Madres Cristianas Santa Mónica association. Starting in 1976 he dedicated himself to the apostolate. This took place in the Parroquia de Santa Rita de Madrid. He organized the first choirs in 1982. Four years later he sought approval from the Archbishop of Madrid. In 1987 the association was officially erected.

The association began in the ministries of the Provincia de San Nicolás. It quickly spread to other provinces. Today it extends to communities worldwide. These communities are in Hungary, the United States and Mexico. Also Costa Rica, Panama, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela.

This devotion addresses modern challenges. Homes face threats from disbelief and materialism. Children’s faith is challenged by destructive influences. The association supports mothers in transmitting faith to their families. Popes have recognized mothers and grandmothers as key figures. They are the first to teach faith to children and grandchildren.

Mothers biologically related, widowed or those who have adopted may join. Also welcome are godmothers and single mothers. Even mothers in difficult situations are welcome. These include mothers who are cohabitating divorced or remarried. The association provides support and evangelization.

Members commit to praying daily for the faith of their children. They pray before the Blessed Sacrament. They strive to live as Christian wives and mothers. They seek to deepen their faith. They aim to follow the example of Santa Mónica. They participate in Masses and activities when possible.

Family members of the Fraternidad Seglar Agustino-Recoleta also promote this devotion. They spread the word to other mothers. They encourage them to embrace their vocation. The association organizes Coros de Oración. Each choir consists of seven mothers. Each mother chooses a day to pray for their children.

Ideally spouses and fathers pray together. This strengthens their bond and faith. It provides a strong example for their children. In Argentina fathers participate in the Madres Mónicas meetings. They share this spirituality with their wives.

The association also offers prayers for expectant mothers. Prayers support those awaiting a child. There are prayers for widowed mothers and grandmothers too. These prayers extend the apostolate’s reach.

In conclusion God entrusts spouses and children to mothers. Mothers embody God’s love for their families. They pray for them day and night. They do this as an essential part of their calling. God listens to mothers who care for their children. The goal is to lead them to faith and eternal life. Mothers become sacraments of God in their homes. God wants them to be the embodiment of tenderness. He wants to save their families through them.

The inspiration behind the association reflects the Church’s priorities. These priorities are supporting women life and family. This inspiration comes from Santa Mónica. She is a model for Christian wives and mothers. Her legacy is cherished by the Agustiniana order. The Parish of Santa Mónica stands as a beacon. It shines for these values in the heart of Madrid.
