Peeking out from the slopes of Mount Hymettus lies Koropi. This town holds stories from ancient times to modern day. Koropi is a town with a rich history and vibrant present.

Koropi is located in East Attica. It is a key part of the municipality of Kropia. Since 2013, the town has been the home of the new training facilities of Panathinaikos football club.

Geographically, Koropi sits 16 km southeast of central Athens. The Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is only 8 km northeast of Koropi. Line 3 of the Athens Metro serves Koropi. The Athens Suburban Railway also stops in Koropi. The A6 toll motorway connects Koropi to Athens and Elefsina.

Koropi stands as the largest settlement within the municipality Kropia. Other nearby settlements include Karellas, Kitsi, Agia Marina, and Agios Dimitrios. Together, they form part of the Athens metropolitan area.

One of Koropi’s historical treasures is the old cathedral. It is the church of the Assumption. Inside, you can find a wall painting monument. Georgios Markou, a post-Byzantine iconographer from the 18th century, created it.

Koropi has seen considerable population growth. In 1981, the population was 12,873. By 2021, it had grown to 20,152.

In the past, Olympic Air had its head office in Koropi. Athens Airways also had its head office in Koropi when it existed.

Koropi is home to two significant sports teams. Koropi F.C. was founded in 1903. Koropi B.C. was founded in 1980.

The Early Bronze Age settlement at Koropi is the largest in Attica. Recent excavations from 2013 to 2020 confirmed the extent of the settlement. These excavations provided data on its urban organization, household activities, crafts, and trade. The inhabitants actively participated in the exchange network of the Aegean during that period. This showed an advanced society.

Around 1996 and 1997, a forest fire threatened Koropi. It burned from the south of Ymittos. Some groves were burned. Most forests suffered destruction. The agricultural part and the city of Koropi escaped much of the fire.

Koropi offers a blend of history and modern life. From its ancient roots to its role in modern Greece, Koropi continues to evolve. It is a place where the past and present come together.
